Philadelphia mobster pleads guilty to gambling

As reported by the Philadelphia Daily News: “Nicholas ‘Nicky the Hat’ Cimino may have operated an illegal online gambling enterprise based in Delaware County, but he’s not about to engage in the notoriously risky business of diming out Philly mobsters.

“‘He’s not a rat,’ Cimino’s attorney, Stephen Patrizio, said yesterday as he left the courthouse in Media, after Cimino, 49, had pleaded guilty to participating in a corrupt organization, money laundering, bookmaking and related counts, and was sentenced to 11 1/2 to 23 months in prison.

“Patrizio felt compelled - probably with good reason - to explain to Judge Frank Hazel that his client hasn’t flipped and won’t be testifying against any co-defendants, including reputed Philadelphia mob associate Louis ‘Bent Finger Lou’ Monacello, who prosecutors say answers to jailed former consigliere George Borgesi.

“…Cimino and 16 others were busted last summer as a result of the ‘Operation Delco Nostra’ organized-crime investigation.

“Authorities say the gambling and loan-sharking operation took in more than $200,000 in wagers per week and included a secret casino, which operated below a Ridley Township gynecologist’s office and featured card games, gambling and prostitutes.

“Yesterday’s guilty plea was the first major conviction stemming from the probe…”

About online poker

Poker is one of the most famous card games played in best online casinos, it is the game that joins a lot of men from all over the world, in addition it is an official sport, that is shown on the silver screens in such great number of homes all around the world. In our day there are no more than just few people, which have not heard about poker or online slots but there are some individuals who know for sure its actual origins, and the most widely spread theory of where and how poker emerged from non-existence, but all people are of the same mind that modern poker was formed from several different card games, in all of them there is a strict hierarchy of hands and “bluffing” is quite a suitable ability, which one is recommended to posses in order to deceive the opponents and win.

A common idea says that the Chinese Emperor, Mu-Tsung, invented a game that was very much like poker in 970 A.D., that has been played using “domino cards”. One more theory speaks of the game was played by the Egyptians in XII-XIII centuries. It was like poker in the hand positions, unfortunately very little records of this game is in our possession today to tell historians the the full story. Around 16th century a game called “Treasure Cards” or “Ganjifa” was widely spread in Persia, which is also allegedly one of poker’s forerunners, a more comparable Persian version is “As Nas”, a game that used 25 cards and used hand placing and rounds for laying bets.

“Primero” is a Spanish game evolved around 16th Century, they believed it to be the “father” of modern poker and a remote relative of “Primo Visto”, that is another widely spread card game. Both of these were mentioned in the book written by John Taylor – “Taylor’s Motto” dated 1621. Primero was played with three cards and rounds of betting were taking place, the essential part of this game was to trick opponents by showing smaller cards. The first records of this game had been found both in Italy and Spain, and while Primero dates back to 1526, records of of Primo Visto appeared only in half a century, so proving the possibility that the two games in question were in fact the equivalent game.

The game Primero became loved by both Germans and French in 17th and 18th centuries. French colonialists exported the game to the new-found America it was named “Poque” then (”Pochen” in German). Poque was the national game of France by the middle of 18th century, and the French settlers who arrived at New Orleans are “in charge” for the first arrival of this game to the North America. From New Orleans the game traveled up the Mississippi River and at the end of 18th century the game took all around the State of Louisiana.

Jonathan H. Green mentioned the “Cheating Game” in 1834 and it is the first mentioning of poker in fiction. The game was played on the Mississippi river vessels, and it actually replaced the three-card game, which was played by many people in Europe around that time, which was known to be a “rigged” game. Green’s book was “An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling”, the first formal novel about poker of all that exist, this novel gives a complete evaluation of the rules for the “Cheating Game”. See the full history of the game in casino review.

Soon after 1875, the game became very popular in the fallow land. During the period of the Wild West there was not a single saloon or a bar without tables of poker. It spread all over the US decade after decade, and in 20th century it became an official sport, recognized by all.
